Flagdaw

Flagdaw

Flagdaw is a little known hill situated between the lower, but much more shapely, Knock Pike and its parent fell, the Pennine giant that is Knock Fell.

Flagdaw is 380m lower than its parent Knock Fell and is almost exactly two miles distant as the crow flies. Flagdaw is a well defined grassy ridge with Swindale Beck to the south and Knock Ore Gill to the north. West of Flagdaw is the slightly lower but far more impressive looking Knock Pike.

With the exception of the summits within the MOD’s Warcop Range, Flagdaw is the only hill on my list of North Pennine summits that does not lie on open access land. Nor are there any public rights of way to the top. As it happens though it is fairly easy to reach the top of Flagdaw via a short steep detour on grass from the public right of way passing to the south.

Other than the wall which passes over the highest point the summit area is of grass and clumps of reeds. There are fine views across the wall to the east looking up at Cross Fell, Great Dun Fell and Knock Fell. To be honest though the view is much better from Knock Pike which is altogether a much more interesting hill.

I like to find something interesting in any hill, including generally unloved fells such as Bink Moss or Tom Smith’s Stone Top. Even I though struggle to find much to say about Flagdaw. I’ve been there, bagged it, but unlike most of the other hills on my North Pennines list I probably won’t go back for a second time.
